Guide to Application for Chinese Visas

Updated 14th Mar. 2023


From the 15th of March 2023, the visa requirements for visits to China will be adjusted according to the latest notice from the Chinese Embassy and Consulates in South Korea. The updated processing procedures and material requirements are as follows:

1. Please fill out your visa application form and make a reservation online through https://www.visaforchina.org. Please DON’T forget to print out your visa application form as well as the reservation form in advance before submitting your application at the scheduled time.

2. All Visa applicants must submit the application documents in person and have their fingerprints collected.

Please be noted that fingerprint collection is not required for:  

a. Children under 14 years old or adults over 70 years old.

b. Diplomatic Passport Holders, diplomatic officials or courtesy visa applicants.

c. Applicants who have had fingerprints collected and have obtained Chinese visa issued by the same Chinese Embassy, Consulates, or the Chinese Visa Application Service Centers with the same passports within 5 years.

d. Applicants whose ten fingers are all mutilated or whose fingerprints are not able to be collected.

Applicants who don’t require fingerprint collection could entrust a third party to submit the application.

3. Documents for applying:

a. Visa Application Form and Reservation Form.

b. Original passport with at least six months of remaining validity and with at least 2 pieces of blank visa pages. A photocopy of the passport page that contains your photo, personal information, and signature.

c. A recent immigration certificate or entry confirmation slip or a valid Korean alien registration card or a Korean visa (third-country citizens only)

d. Previous Chinese passport or previous Chinese visa (suitable for Chinese nationality, and later joined foreign nationality).

e. Specific documents for different visa categories:

Commercial trade activities.

Business invitation letter issued by a trade partner in China, or trade fair invitation, etc. The invitation letter should contain:

a) Information of the applicant (incl. full name, gender, date of birth, passport no. etc.);

b) Details of the planned visit (incl. purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relationship between the applicant and the inviting party, details of any financial support to be provided during the stay in China) ;

c) Information of the inviting party (incl.name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or individual).

*If you submit a copy of your previous Chinese visa (and a copy of the data sheet of your original passport if you have changed your passport), you will be granted multiple visas.

F

Exchanges, visits, study tours or other relevant activities

Provide one of the photocopy of the following document:

1. Invitation letter issued by a partner in China. The invitation letter should contain:

a) Information of the applicant (incl. full name, gender, date of birth, passport no. etc.);

b) Details of the planned visit (incl. purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relationship between the applicant and the inviting party, details of any financial support to be provided during the stay in China) ;

c) Information of the inviting party (incl.name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or individual).

2. Personnel engaged in geographic surveying and mapping activities in China: Invitation letter issued by Department of Science, Technology and Cooperation, State Administration of Surveying and Mapping.

3.Exchange performers: the invitation letter issued by the organizer and the copy of the non-commercial approval of the cultural department for the performance.

4. For experts staying in China less than 90 days: Invitation Letter for Foreign Experts to China issued by the competent authorities of foreign countries in cities divided into districts or above.

5. Volunteers or volunteers staying in China less than 90 days: Invitation letter issued by the unit in China.

Z

Work

Provide one of the photocopy of the following document:

1. Valid Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit;

2. Letter of Invitation to Foreigners for offshore Petroleum Operation in China;

3. Registration Certificate of Resident Representative Offices of Enterprises of Foreign Countries(Regions);

4. Document issued by Chinese Cultural and tourism department.

5. Copy of Commercial performance approval issued by the administrative department of Culture and Tourism (For short-term commercial performance in China for less than 90 days, the Certificate of Short-term Work of Foreigners in China shall also be submitted.

Original and photocopy of the following document:

1. Confirmation letter of the staff of the Foreign Cultural Center issued by the International Exchange and Cooperation Bureau of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism

Long term study (more than 180 days)

1. Original and photocopy of Admission Notice issued by a school or other entities in China;

2. Original and photocopy of Visa Application for Study in China(Form JW201 or Form JW202) issued by Chinese relevant authorities

Original and photocopy of Admission Notice issued by a school or other entities in China.

S1

(long-term

Spouse, parent, child under the age of 18 or parent-in-law of foreigner(s) residing in China for work, study or other purposes (more than 180 days), Person who needs to reside in China for other personal matters

If the inviter has already worked or study in China:

1. The original and photocopy document of to prove relationship between the applicant and the inviter (such as the proof of family relationship, the proof of marriage, marriage certificate, the birth certificate, etc.)

2. Invitation letter issued by foreigners working in China. The invitation letter should contains:
a) Information of the applicant (incl. full name, gender, date of birth, etc.);
b) Information regarding the visit (incl. purpose of visit, intended arrival date, intended place(s) to stay, intended duration of stay, relationship between the applicant and the inviting party, and details of any financial support to be provided during the stay in China);
c) Information of the inviting party (incl. name, contact telephone number, address, signature of individual).

3. The copy of passport and residence permit of the inviter.

If the inviter and their relatives apply the visa as the same time:

a. The photocopy of the document of Working or long -term learning visa application;

b. The original document of to prove relationship between the applicant and the inviter (such as the proof of family relationship, the proof of marriage, marriage certificate, the birth certificate, etc.);

c. The Description issued by the related Chinese company or school.

* For the family members of foreign resident journalist: Visa notification letter issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  

S2

(short-term

Family member of foreigner(s) staying or residing in China for work, study or other purposes (less than 180 days), Applying for a visa to stay in China for other personal matters, such as handling litigation, inheritance, real estate or medical treatment

Family members only refer to: spouse, parents, parents-in-law, children, grown children’s spouse, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren

1. Photocopy of the inviter's passport and residence certificate (referring to foreigners who stay or reside in China for work, study or other purposes)

2. Invitation letter issued by foreigners working in China. The invitation letter should contains:
a) Information of the applicant (incl. full name, gender, date of birth, etc.);
b) Information regarding the visit (incl. purpose of visit, intended arrival date, intended place(s) to stay, intended duration of stay, relationship between the applicant and the inviting party, and details of any financial support to be provided during the stay in China);
c) Information of the inviting party (incl. name, contact telephone number, address, signature of individual).

3. Photocopy of document of to prove relationship between the applicant and the inviter (such as the proof of family relationship, the proof of marriage, marriage certificate, the birth certificate, etc.)

*In the case of personal matters, proof of personal matters shall be provided upon request by the consular officer

Q1

(long-term

Family member of Chinese citizen or foreigner(s) with permanent residence status in China applying for residence in China for family reunion(more than 180 days). Or residence visa for child to be fostered in China

*Family members only refer to: spouse, parents, parents-in-law, children, grown children’s spouse, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren

For family reunion:

1. The original and photocopy document of to prove relationship between the applicant and the inviter (such as the proof of family relationship, the proof of marriage, marriage certificate, the birth certificate, etc.)

2. Invitation letter issued by foreigners working in China. The invitation letter should contains:
a) Information of the applicant (incl. full name, gender, date of birth, etc.);
b) Information regarding the visit (incl. purpose of visit, intended arrival date, intended place(s) to stay, intended duration of stay, relationship between the applicant and the inviting party, and details of any financial support to be provided during the stay in China);
c) Information of the inviting party (incl. name, contact telephone number, address, signature of individual).

3. The inviter's Chinese identity certificate (such as Chinese identity card or household register, copies of passport, return permit, Taiwan resident permit and work or residence certificate in China for more than 6 months for overseas Chinese and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents), or copies of foreigner's passport and China permanent residence permit.

For foster care:

1. The Original and photocopy of the natural parents or guardians passports, as well as the notarized and authenticated certification showing the relationship between parents or guardians and children;

2. Foster entrusted notarization issued by Chinese Embassies/Consulates General in foreign countries or Foster Care Power of Attorney notarized and authenticated in the country of residence or in China;

3. A letter agreeing to foster care issued by the trustee living in China who has agreed to provide foster care services and photocopy of the ID of the trustee;

4. A photocopy of the residence certificate indicating the parent(s) resided abroad when the child was born, providing that either or both parents of the child are Chinese citizens.

Q2

(short-term

Family member of Chinese citizen or foreigner(s) with permanent residence status in China applying for residence in China for family reunion(less than 180 days).

1. Invitation letter issued by foreigners working in China. The invitation letter should contains:
a) Information of the applicant (incl. full name, gender, date of birth, etc.);
b) Information regarding the visit (incl. purpose of visit, intended arrival date, intended place(s) to stay, intended duration of stay, relationship between the applicant and the inviting party, and details of any financial support to be provided during the stay in China);
c) Information of the inviting party (incl. name, contact telephone number, address, signature of individual).

2. The inviter's Chinese identity certificate (such as Chinese identity card or household register, copies of passport, return permit, Taiwan resident permit and work or residence certificate in China for more than 6 months for overseas Chinese and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents), or copies of foreigner's passport and China permanent residence permit.

4. * applicants could apply for 3-year-multiple entries visa if they could submit a photocopy document of to prove relationship between the applicant and the inviter (such as the proof of family relationship, the proof of marriage, marriage certificate, the birth certificate, etc.).

R

Foreigner of high talent or specialist

Relevant certificate documents provided by high-level qualified personnel with special skills meeting the requirements of China's relevant departments and urgently needed by China

*Applicants whose spouse or minor children needs to submit the proof of relationship (such as marriage certificate, birth certificate) if applying for S2 visa.

C

Crew member

A letter of guarantee issued by a foreign transport company or an invitation letter issued by a relevant organization in China.

D

Permanent residence

The original and photocopy of the Confirmation Form for Alien Permanent Residence Status issued by the Ministry of Public Security of China

R

Foreigner of high talent or specialist;

Copy of the Confirmation Letter for Foreign High-end Talents.

J1

Journalist

(Resident foreign journalist of permanent office of a foreign news agency in China)

The photocopy of Visa notification letter issued by News department of Chinese Foreign Ministry.

J2

Journalist

(Foreign journalist visiting China for short-term news coverage)

The photocopy of Visa notification letter issued by News department of Chinese Foreign Ministry or Relevant authorized units.

f. To apply for an emergency humanitarian visa, such as going to China for a funeral or visiting a critically unwell patient, the deceased’s or patient’s identity document (such as a Chinese ID card or a foreigner passport, etc.), a death certificate of the deceased or a medical certificate a critical illness notice of the patient issued by the hospital, relatives Proof of relationship and other documents will be required for submission.

4. All Visa Categories mentioned above shall be applied via the Chinese Visa Application Service Center. You may contact our center for the specific procedures and requirements for issuing visa.
