Notification of implementing hand-held body scanning at the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre in Manchester
With effect from 1 July, 2022

Please be advised that a hand-held scanner will be used to carry out security scans on all persons and bags on entering the premises. The purpose of implementing this procedure is to ensure the safety and security of our customers, members of the public, our staff and our property by ensuring that prohibited, illegal and suspicious items are not brought into the Manchester Visa Centre (‘MVC’). The scanning is voluntary, however, failure to permit scanning will result in denied access onto the premises. Please allow ample time to undergo this process.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are pregnant or with implantable devices such as pacemakers, cardioverter defibrillators (ICD), cochlear implants, please (a) check with your GP beforehand whether you can undergo a scan. Please note that MVC will use the V·RESOURCING Portable High Sensitivity Metal Detector to scan, and (b) please inform the security officer or our staff promptly on your arrival at MVC and provide evidence of this either a letter from GP or an ICD identification card. Our security staff will not proceed to scan you until the verification of these documents is carried out. If you fail to follow this procedure and do not notify the security officers upon your arrival at MVC, you do so at your own risk and we accept no liability for any damage or injury or discomfort you may suffer as a result of the scan.

This security scan will be performed in the entrance area by a member of the security staff. It will take just a few minutes. Anyone with the following Items will not be allowed to enter MVC.

·         Prohibited items: Knives, glass bottles, alcohol, pepper spray containers, air horns, catapults and slingshots, darts, lighter fuel, mercury, paint, razor blades, scissors-blades measuring more than 6cm, sporting bats, toy or replica guns (whether plastic or metal), acid, hypodermic syringes (unless supported by medical evidence).

·         Illegal items: Explosives, narcotics, drug paraphernalia, firearms.

·         Suspicious items: Screw drivers, hammers, nails, smelling items, large amounts of merchandise.

PLEASE NOTE: The above items are not exhaustive and MVC reserves the right to categorise other items as falling within these categories.

The scanner we use, the V·RESOURCING Portable High Sensitivity Metal Detector, is a hand-held metal detector, also known as a hand-held detection wand. It allows security staff to find hidden metallic objects that might pose a security threat. The hand-held metal detector does not emit radiation like an X-ray machine, it uses an electro-magnetic field (EMF) to detect metals.
